A new year has come and gone, and you have to ask yourself....what did I accomplish with my time? Did I make a difference in the world? Was my time well spent enjoying my family and friends? Did I reach any of my goals that I set for myself? How did I handle the challenges that I faced this year?
My birthday is in January so I am often reflective during this time of year. I want to look back on my life and be happy with my choices, my experiences and how I handled adversity. That is not easy to do. Often I tend to focus and what I did not do, rather than what I was able to accomplish successfully. Each day of our life we are given an opportunity to change...to be different...to be better. My goal for 2014 is simple; to live each day with grace, gratitude and a loving spirit. I want to be able to provide each of my patients with excellent care, and empathetic ear and a supportive environment. I want to give back to those in my community that need a helping hand. And finally, I want to be the best sister, daughter, friend and mother that I can be considering all the time limitations I am often faced with.
Sounds like a lot? Well, tomorrow is another day.
Wishing you many blessings in the upcoming year,
Recently I needed to hire an exterminator. Like most modern consumers I went to Yelp! to read recommendations on local services in my area. I came across a great company that had one bad review. The review really talked poorly about the owner's son and what a terrible job he did on her apartment. But I decided to read all the reviews and noticed that all the other ratings and comments were pretty high. So I decided to give him a try. As fate would have it, the son shows up for my appointment and he was absolutely wonderful! Of course he asked me if I read the review. I thought to myself, of all the glowing comments his customers shared about his work, he focused on the negative one. That is what we all tend to do. He explained to me that his unhappy client did not listen when he was trying to explain what could or could not be done. So she became angry. I could truly relate to this story. How many times have you thought you were being clear and realize, wow how did this go so wrong? The key to a good relationship is trust and good communication. It is very important when making a decision about your dental care. A good team member can explain treatment options, but patients should be their own dental advocates. Here are a few questions you can ask when you are not sure about dental procedures:
- What are the treatment options?
- Is there alternative treatments?
- What are the risk and benefits to treatment?
- Can this re-occur?
- What options would give me the best outcome?
Think about your relationship with your dentist as a partnership. Build a relationship that is based on open and honest communication. It is important to tell your dentist about yourself and your needs and you should not be afraid to ask key questions about your dental care. By the way, never judge a business by one bad review....it could be a communication problem!
Can you believe it is 2013? Happy New Year, by the way! With the start of a bright and shiny new year, we all have the promise of new beginnings, fresh starts and a chance at happily ever after. But then Feburary comes and we ask ourselves, "What diet?" "Workout when?" "Floss what?". Yes, we become victims of memory loss and we go back to our old familiar and comfortable habits. Taking care of ourselves should not be this hard! Together, let's make a pledge to be good to ourselves. Repeat after me, "I promise to brush twice a day, floss regularly and use the treadmill for my workouts and not just a clothes hanger. I also pledge to be kind to others, eat healthy and get a good night's sleep at some point!" Ready, set, go...just think, we have all year to make this work!
Really? Can you believe it is time to plan a Thanksgiving dinner? Didn't school just start? Weren't the leaves suppose to change colors for fall? Time seems to move very quickly these days, and before we know it, it will be a new year again! Before the holiday season really kicks into high gear, take some time to take care of yourself. Oral health is so important to our overall health and well being. Use those dental benefits you have been paying for all year, and get your teeth cleaned or whiten for the holidays. What about that crown you have been putting off or that partial that broke last April that you were planning to get fixed? Now is the time! Cease the day...or at least seize the benefit plan!
And by the way....BOO! Happy Halloween!
I love summer. It is my favorite time of year. I think what I love most is a more flexible schedule even though I continue to work. What I really enjoy is time away from 'the machine', better known as school. Every parent knows that once school begins your life is no longer your own. It's about homework, school projects and sports. Summer makes me forget just for a little while that I was a person before I became a parent. I try and change my routine by reading a summer novel, biking down by the beach, and visiting with friends. This year I am planning on taking one of those Hollywood bus tours (even though I have lived here my whole life) just to feel like a tourist in my hometown! I hope you will have any opportunity to enjoy some quality time with family and friends this summer and try a new experience. You will be surprised how much fun you can have in your own backyard!
Have you heard about our summer whitening offer? Just in time for reunions, weddings or whatever, we are offering a take home whitening kit with custom trays for $125 (regularly $300). I hope you will use this opportunity to brighten your smile!
Relax and enjoy your summer....because you know what starts in September!
Yours in dental health,
